When you arrive at the airport, you have several options for getting to your ski town. You could get the train, or the coach or you could hire a car. But there are things you should consider with all these possibilities. There could be long waits for the next train or bus as the train or coach leaving times might not match with your plane arrival time. When you get to the train or coach drop off point, you will likely have to wait around for a taxi or another bus up the mountain to your accommodation.
Another option is to hire a car as if there are only a couple of you, this can be cheaper than a private transfer and much simpler than catching the coach or train. However, you should watch out for charges when hiring a car. If you are driving to the ski resort you will need snow tyres, snow chains and probably a ski box if you are carrying your own snowboards. All this costs more. There is often scarce parking in the ski town. Chances are you will need to pay for parking for the duration of your stay and this can get expensive. And of course you need to know how to get there.
But if you decide to use a a private ski transfer company, then the driver will greet you at the arrivals lounge, he will help you with your bags, and drive you in comfort to your ski chalet or apartment. All you have to do is sit there and relax. There are no concerns about driving in bad weather, finding your way, fitting snow chains, where to park.
If you are flying into Geneva airport then you can hire a car from either the French side of the airport, or the Swiss side but you must to ensure the vehicle has the correct road taxes. Car hire from the French side is often cheaper as it does not include the Swiss road tax, but means you cannot enter Switzerland and must take the long route round. You will also need to pay for fuel costs which are at least fifty Euros each way, tolls which are another 15 to 20 Euros each way. It is far simpler and often cheaper to find a mini-bus firm doing Geneva airport transfers.
If you are flying into Lyon airport then the road tolls are far more, around 30 Euros each way and it is a two and half hour drive to the Three Valleys Ski area. It can be a long tedious journey along the motorway. Far better to find a company offering Lyon airport transfers and book with them.
Chambery airport is the nearest to the ski region and is only around an hour's drive away. However, the road to Val Thorens or Courchevel can be very busy and take a long time in peak seasons. You can catch the bus through to Moutiers, the nearest large town to the ski region and then get a taxi or bus up to the resort, but for ease and less hassle why not book Chambery airport to Courchevel
Finally the least utilised airport for the Three Valleys is Grenoble. This is a longer distance on on than Lyon by around forty-five minutes and so makes for a 3 hour journey to most ski resorts in the Trois Vallee area. Instead of having to worry about road taxes, traffic, snow and where you are going, book Grenoble airport transfers and sit back and relax or sleep for the journey.
Which ever way you choose to travel make sure you plan well ahead and find out coach and train times or book your airport transfer early, especially if travelling peak season when transfer firms get reserved quickly and seats on trains and coaches can be difficult to find.
